"This is what can happen if you don't settle,"

From Wired

DULUTH, Minnesota -- Jammie Thomas, a single mother of two, was found liable Thursday for copyright infringement in the nation's first file-sharing case to go before a jury.

Twelve jurors here said the Minnesota woman must pay $9,250 for each of 24 shared songs that were the subject of the lawsuit, amounting to $222,000 in penalties......

Ouch.

Here's a Wired post about the jurors.

Press reports of trials are always more than a bit frustrating to read, as the things I'd want to know aren't often reported.

A file-sharing verdict of this magnitude strikes me as within the range of possible results. It also strikes me as one more reason why a Creative Commons music culture can and should arise, because a copyright may give one the right to deny downloading, and yet a popular culture in which the issue is irrelevant will be an advance.
