Attribution in Videos (?)

Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).

When CC music is used in a video by another person, attribution is required. Some video makers include the music author's name in the end credits within the video. While others provide details outside of the video, usually along with the text description of the video. We've seen examples of both in videos featuring music from ccMixter.

I would think that most people would prefer to be included in the credits within the video but I believe attribution by either method is acceptable. Personally I don't care too much either way.

But it seems to me that since it's stated in the deed - "the manner specified by the author or licensor". Would it not be good idea to specify as a group at ccMixter? Even if it may seem kind of pointless, I think it actually makes it easier for people looking for music for their videos just because it's specific.

What do you think?

I think it depends on the video.

If the video contains credits for any of the other contributors inside the video, than it would seem fair to have that for the music, too.

However, if all of the credits are external to the video, then it would seem heavy handed to ask for the music credit to be inside the video.

The moral of the story is, that even doing attribution properly is non-trivial. :-)

However I would vote against ccMixter doing it's own thing. If an idea makes sense for a group as large and varied as ccMixter, than arguably it makes sense to have that covered in the CC license itself.

So I would rather support a movement to clarify such things right in the cc license.

when the early "lonelygirl15" videos came out and used a number of our remixes, they attributed it in youtube, although the attribute was not in the actual video. but no other credits were either, as spinmieister pointed out. still, a number of us reaped huge exposure out of this, as well as the site itself. the video with my remix has had almost a half million views.

also, i'd have to agree with his (spinmeister) view of the group policy idea.

personally, the attribute is the right thing to do, but since what we are doing is so evolutionary and revolutionary, there is no established protocol beyond doing the right thing.

besides, i'm the one with the source files.

Artists are welcome to post something for themselves - in their profile...

That should work for most.

True. Putting that info in the profile is smart. Kind of like Porchcat's.
