DIY Sound Proof Boxes
A great alternative to soundproofing an entire room is building a small sound proof box around the microphone. What a good idea, I wish I'd thought of it earlier. I'll be giving it a shot. Nothing this fancy though. Maybe I'll just buy a styrofoam cooler. : )

I would think twice about building a sound box that encapsulated my mic with my laptop. My biggest issue is the fan noise from the laptop.
Yeah. Putting the laptop inside the box does seems kind of dumb. I'm sure that was just for the picture.

The funny thing is I suggested something like this as just a brainstorm on the homerecording.com bbs, and nobody thought it was a good idea. I sort of do this (use foam panels around the mic) in my small walk-in closet when I record in there (the clothes help dampen too). I agree about the importance of getting the mic far away from the computer's fan, ESPECIALLY if using a condensor mic. Dynamic mics aren't quite as high resolution as condensors from what I've read, but they are definitely better at not picking up background noise, especially if you set the input volume so you're right on top of the mic and then EQ out the proximity effect afterward. Thanks for sharing.
the laptop doesn't make any significant noise in the booth. I use a Mac. I guess most PCs do have loud fans....it's custom built for the user
